Team AID Asha's motto is "How far will you go for a good cause? 26.2 miles." But when we count the months of preparation and accumulated training runs, the total mileage is closer to 850 miles - roughly the distance from Boston to Chicago!

A marathon-veteran friend inspired me to run a marathon in 2008, and I knew I wanted to use this monumental personal challenge to raise money for a good cause. Friends and family connections brought me to Asha for Education and the Chicago Marathon, and I am honored to be able to help such a worthy organization.

Asha is a voluntary non-profit organization committed to promoting sustainable, equitable and just education and development in India, by working with grassroots organizations and movements. Asha supports and initiates efforts in various interconnected spheres such as education, livelihoods, natural resources, health, women's empowerment and social justice.

My goal is to raise $2,620, or $100 per mile of the marathon. What this means is that for each mile I run, we can cover education and living expenses for four children for an entire month. At this rate, by the half-marathon mark, we will have raised enough money to completely take care of two children for the entire duration of their school days plus supply electricity and drinking water to several rural households. By the time I reach the finish line on October 12th, we will have raised funds to educate over a thousand rural pregnant women about infant health and train hundreds of rural poor in life-sustaining skills such as using a bank and making clothes. These are the thoughts that sustain me on long training runs and on the days I think I just don’t have it in me to get out of bed at 6am and log my run before work. I invite you to be a part of it by donating any amount you are able to. No gift is too small – over 700 million people in India get by on less than $2 per day, and even a small contribution has a real and immediate impact.
